Loss Of Taste

Dry mouth problems can often lead to a loss of taste, if only for the simple reason that you lack enough saliva to be able to eat without watering down the food in your mouth. However, other factors may also reduce your ability to fully taste your food. And, of course, if you've had radiation treatments aimed at your mouth region, your taste buds may have been severely damaged.

Licorice Tea
Usage: There seems to be very little information available about regaining taste. However, a highly experienced herbalist I know has recommended licorice tea to me. I should note, however, that I have been unable to find any supporting evidence for this claim.
Frank's Comments: Since licorice tea is sometimes referred to as "the great detoxifier," I drink it fairly often for that benefit alone. However, any gain in my ability to taste cannot be directly connected to the tea, since most of my taste buds were supposed to recover over time anyway. (WARNING: There is some evidence that too much licorice tea can be very detrimental to you, especially if you have high blood pressure. A little goes a long way, but you still should discuss using licorice with your doctor, especially if you have any existing health problems.)

Tongue Cleaning
Usage: There are many tongue cleaners on the market; most are advertised for helping to prevent bad breath. Some are only scrapers, while others have both a scraper and a brush. Follow the individual product directions for best results.
Frank's Comments: One problem I have with dry mouth is that certain foods tend to coat my tongue and stay there, even after gargling. I find that cleaning my tongue, though I don't do it as frequently as I should, can make a slight to moderate improvement in my taste.

NOTE: Since it is very hard to find information on how to regain taste, we strongly encourage anyone with reliable information to share their findings with our readers.
